The 9 Best 2024 Haircut Trends See Photos

face-framing layers medium hair

Face framing layers open things up and highlight one's facial features. With most of your hair clipped back, take a moment to notice your face shape and the features you want to highlight. My face shape is square, and for best results, I typically like front layers to accentuate my cheekbones. This choppy shag with face-framing layers is pure rock and roll but with a feminine flair. "To style this effortless look daily, use Virtue Texturizing Spray ($40) to add definition and movement," says Abergel. Laura Harrier's mid-length hair is kept slicked to the sides and straight—save for the ends, which are swooped outward.

Layered Hair for Inverted Triangle Face Shapes

Start with a gloss treatment at your salon and use hair oil (we like Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil) when styling to maintain shine. The shags and wolf cuts from early 2023 have grown out and are even…shaggier and wolfier. Instead of trimming back, J.Lo says embrace it (and who are we to disagree with J.Lo?). Hairstylist Leigh Hardges recommends this look for fine to medium-fine hair (too thick, and things might get a little too hard to tame). Bangs need trims every three to four weeks, but the tousled look can be easily achieved with a spritz of texturizer like Rahua Freestyle Texturizer. Another short haircut you can expect to take off in 2024 is the chin-length bob.

Piecey Bangs Continue...

“Having the front layers down and everything else up creates a beautiful look,” she adds. Hairdressers must be honest about how they feel about your chosen cut. They also know some tips on what to do to style and maintain your tresses. This Pamela Anderson-inspired updo is a great way to try a ‘90s trend without buying a crimper and butterfly clips (but you could do that too). "The key is bringing it ever so slightly from a high-impact, saturated sky blue into a dusky and dusted mid-tone," says Bermudez. Kristen Bell's shoulder-length, layered look is amplified with a hint of darkness at the roots.

#24: Long Textured Shag with Tousled Bangs

To naturally create pieceyness within the cut, ask your stylist to incorporate a razoring or thinning technique to remove bulk and enhance the shape. Try a long side fringe with layers for oval face shapes if you like a classic look. Hairstyles with long side bangs frame the face nicely without having the high maintenance of a full bang.

Global applications offer clean, 100% coverage as this method involves painting all of the hair. However, this approach requires regular maintenance, so ensure you have adequate time for upkeep. I highly recommend investing in a salon-approved hydrating shampoo and conditioner. If they don't organically mesh well together, you may have some corners to eliminate or soften up. I am not a fan of a U-shaped haircut, so to avoid this, I first used point cutting to trim my ends on both sides directly across. Then, I blended my newly trimmed ends into my new face-framing layers, using point cutting to soften the point between those two lengths.

A short angled bob with long bangs and front layers is a sultry twist to a classic short cut. Face-framing layers for straight short hair give otherwise limp or dull hair a boost of texture and movement. If you’re looking to wear a wavy blunt bob this year, experts recommend asking your stylist to get rid of some weight in the ends to remove bulkiness. "This will allow for straight sleek looks, or rounder, fuller, and denser looks depending on your hair texture," says Los Angeles-based hairstylist Michael Dueñas. He also recommends keeping the cut square as this will create height in the corners and push the hair forward towards your face.

Medium Textured Cut with Dimensional Balayage

Hairstylist Devin Toth recommends using a flatiron to really separate chunky pieces around the face and enhance that multi-step angular look. Some of us still earmark September as "the beginning of the year" thanks to decades of school planners. Instead of the soft pinks of summer, we’re upping the ante with a smoky chili red.

#14: Textured and Lived-In Beach Waves

Razored layers in thin hair can help boost the volume of fine hair types. You’ll need to be sure your stylist is familiar and comfortable with razor cutting to maintain the density. Shoulder-length hair with face-framing bangs can help enhance the illusion of fuller hair. A layered wolf cut with bangs is a toned-down version of a mullet. Try a medium-layered hairstyle like a wolf cut if you want the feel of a mullet without the commitment.

#23: Medium Shag with Long Curtain Bangs

Short hair around your face will give the appearance of softness and add tons of body. I would use texturizing shears on the layers to lighten for weightless lift and movement. You might want to change things up, and a swoop bang gives a fresh style so you can enjoy the grow-out.

A long bob with flipped ends is a simple yet polished approach that everyone can incorporate into their personal look book. This hairstyle is easy to achieve either with a straightening iron or a blow dryer and a round brush. If you’re bored of your straight hair and blunt hairstyle, you can ask your stylist to soften it up with a point cut bob. By cutting the hair at an angle, it instantly appears textured. A point cut bob looks great on a variety of hair hues, but balayages in fresh colors like caramel seem to be what the women favor nowadays.

I don’t recommend asking for many layers if you have fine hair. When you want to have lots of texture, use a large barrel curling iron. A haircut with curled layers for ladies with round faces is ideal. This cut with medium layers is perfect for those who want to add more movement and volume to their hair.

Ask about any color recommendations to take your new style to the next level. Knowing some tricks of the hair cutting trade is key, especially when it comes to getting layered hair. One reason for this is making sure you’re getting a haircut that complements your face shape. Layers can also add body and bounce to limp hair, soften up your square jawline, or lengthen your round face. Medium-length layered haircuts are the best way to create movement, dimension, and versatility with your hair.

Use a hair spray like TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Level 2 Hold Curl Hair Spray to keep waves in place all day without feeling stiff. If you use shine-enhancing products, your hair will always look chic and youthful. It would be helpful if you talked with your stylist about a proper schedule to keep your cut looking sharp. For this particular cut, I suggest a method called slide cutting. Slide cutting is a gentle approach that enables flexibility and less room for error. By keeping your shears open and making delicate pulses—never fully closing them together, let them glide down the front of the hair.

Her curtain bangs are paired with big, voluminous curls for the ultimate going-out style. If you’re unsure about what will work best for you, he always recommends consulting with your stylist. Some hairstyles can make women feel more feminine and appealing, and this hairdo with face-framing layers is one of them. Long bangs highlight your bone structure, while money pieces brighten your face. This is a great hairstyle idea for true fashionistas with long hair length.

If you have long blonde hair, adding layers can add volume and movement to your hair. Layers work especially well for those with round, oval, or heart-shaped faces. You know those hair commercials where the models toss their heads in slow motion, and their hair seems to glide effortlessly? Besides a great deep conditioner and expert styling, the key to this energy is a hairstyle featuring face-framing layers. If you're bored of your current cut, face-framing hairstyles are one of the easiest and best ways to subtly switch it up. Whether your hair is pin-straight, wavy, or curly, there's a layered look we just know you’ll love.

Don't forget to show off your favorite chandelier earrings with a proper tuck-back. When caring for colored hair, use a set like Nexxus Color Assure Shampoo and Conditioner to ensure your strands stay vibrant for as long as possible. Already have face-framing layers but still want to change up your style?

If your hair is a little rebellious, you can go over it once with a smoothing iron. But keep in mind that it's all in the blowout; straighteners should only be used as a finishing tool. Mane with tons of choppy layers requires styling with heat tools and quality products.

#10: Barely-There Bangs

Any set of layers that will result in having your face look slimmer as opposed to chubby works for this face shape. To get the elongated look, go for layered hair that has a little bit of height at the top section of your hair. Chunky layers shift volume from the ends to the roots and create a flattering, modern shape. Pairing pigtails with face-framing layers makes the perfect E-girl hairstyle. This style looks especially great with curtain bangs to complement the pigtails.

For medium-length thick hair, use a combination of the TO112 Hair Cream and TO112 Serum, starting at the ends and working your way up. With this hairstyle, always finish the look with the Davines Texture Spray to give it a bit of definition and hold. Shaggy layers will give fine strands a boost for maximum volume. Ombré color gives the perfect cool girl color without maintenance.

Maximum Texture

The sultry color toes the line between brown and black will look particularly striking on olive or tan skin tones, and more dramatic on lighter skin tones. For this sultry hue, you’ll want to go just past dark chocolate. Hairstylist Meg Schipani points out that root touch-ups and toner will be necessary to keep this shade looking glossy. We're swooning over Alessandra Ambrosio's undone long layers. To get her supermodel waves, loosely wrap large sections around a 1.5-inch barrel and shake out afterward—no precision needed.

#18: Low-Maintenance Balayage with Long Bangs

Those with a heart-shaped face have a wider forehead and a narrower chin. This type of cut will help to balance out the bottom half of your face to offer a slimming effect. To really define and emphasize your already prominent cheekbones, ask your hairstylist for face-framing bangs that barely graze the highest points on your face.

face-framing layers medium hair

Not only do face-framing hairstyles look good on just about anyone, but they create a softer look and allow for more movement, too. Ahead, see 45 face-framing hairstyles to get you inspired for your next look, complete with insights from three celebrity hairstylists. Shoulder-length hair with curtain bangs is the new modern spin on the classic bob. A face-framing haircut with curtain bangs and layers adds volume in all the right places while maintaining fullness where necessary. A long side-swept fringe on a razored bob is a great way to add flair for fine to medium hair. Very short bob haircuts or the trendy term “bixie,” adds layering for movement and the feeling of fuller density.

Anyone else remember the grip that curtain bangs had on hairstyles in 2021? It seemed like everyone we knew was coming out with a new crop, but honestly who wouldn't with a cut this cute. Curls might be naturally more footloose and fancy-free, but they can still feel heavy if not layered. This mane, cut by stylist Sal Salcedo, gets a flattering touch from wispy bangs and layers that graze the cheekbones and chin. This hairstyle incorporates both styles to make an effortlessly cool look. If you're looking for that gorgeous blowout style, getting longer face framing pieces can help achieve that.

A layered, feathered, shaggy cut completes an edgy rock and roll style. To achieve heavy layers, this requires a medium to thick hair density. Layers with highlights enhance separation and define textured ends. The shorter pieces in the front and throughout the crown lift the roots.

Elongated Layered Haircut for Straight Hair

Pairing those layers with a blunt cut can also serve as a flattering contrast for your round visage. Here’s a classic bob that can take curly hair to the highest level. Finish with a layered back and impressively paired side bang for your perfect look. The perfect way to boost volume with fine hair is to have soft and moving layers. This hair has a weightless effect and will make your hair look full and voluminous. Have your hair look fresh and full with a medium-length haircut with stacked layers.

You can still achieve that sleek style while still having shape at the front. We love this medium-length cut with shorter face framing layers that just graze the apples of the cheeks. This will ensure that you can still fit most of your hair up into an updo or ponytail with just a few wisps framing your face.

If you can, try to style the front away from your face for the most up-to-date style. Shags can be worn straight as well, but just remember to keep it moving backward around your features. People looking for a simple hairstyle should consider layers and bangs that frame the face.

A quick spritz of sea salt spray will get you her undone finish. The iconic '70s hairstyle has had a major renaissance, and for good reason. Its feathered layers create a ton of volume and dimension, giving it serious main character vibes. Adding subtle layers to curly hair can give ringlets bounce and a little height, as proven by Alanna Arrington. Zendaya's long layers are the perfect length to complement her glossy straight locks. Paired with a middle part and full brows, her overall look is a match made in beauty heaven.

Shake your hair lightly to loosen up the shape, and then finish it up with hairspray. A messy bob with a face frame for straight hair is an edgy crop for a density that otherwise tends to lay limp. Pairing face-framing bangs for short hair to a bob adds personality to a classic haircut.

Shoulder-length hair is easy to maintain, yet it can look frumpy and boring unless it has been given the right shape. Ask your stylist to cut some soft layers to add volume and give your hair some oomph. Great for naturally curly or wavy hair, shaggy layers boast loads of texture and a distinctive 70’s rebellion vibe. Add a pop of color around the hairline to define the face-framing locks. Bobs are such a classic look, but it’s always fun to play around with this shape and try something new. Face-framing layers help add more dimension and shape to a commonly straight and sleek style.

The Devil's Rejects Star Reveals How He Brought Otis Back From the Dead for 3 From Hell

otis from house of 1000 corpses

Spector's driver, who made the emergency call from the castle, later testified that Spector said, "I think I've killed someone." Spector was sentenced in May 2009. The Firefly family house can be found on the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood, where it was built for 1982 musical The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. Also on the backlot is the street where Don Willis (Harrison Young, familiar as the older Private Ryan) lives – apparently a neighbour of the Munsters. Rob Zombie delivers the kind of balls-out horror movie all 12-year-old boys want to make, before dreary good taste saps that furious energy.

An ambulance, an empty lot and a loophole: One man’s fight for a place to live

Even once the moratorium was lifted, anti-Chinese sentiment had pervaded the American consciousness. As a result, up until the Chinese Cemetery of Los Angeles was built in 1922 by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of Los Angeles, Chinese citizens could only be buried in a potter's field owned by the County. Racism against the Chinese community didn't stop at their burial plots, though. Around the same time, Los Angeles razed the original Chinatown to make way for Union Station.

House of 1000 Corpses was Rob Zombie's directorial debut

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses, and NECA has announced that they’re celebrating with two brand new action figures. Fans can check out 3 From Hell during a special three-night event beginning on September 16th. Tickets for the September 16th, 17th, and 18th nationwide release of 3 From Hell are available at FathomEvents.com/3FromHell. Although Dr. Satan appears in a deleted scene of The Devil's Rejects, his existence, at least based on what Zombie said, remains up for debate. He is presumably the father of Mama Firefly, previously known as Gloria Teasdale.

There’s A Plot Hole Regarding Otis Driftwood In Rob Zombie’s Firefly Trilogy

Later, in the winter of 1976, Baby returned to Ruggsville alone and resumed her life on the Firefly farm while Driftwood continued his murderous rampage. Otis traveled across the country stealing and selling cars to survive, but eventually returned to Ruggsville and resumed his relationship with Baby and the other Firefly family members. Otis and Baby grew very close and found that they shared a common passion for committing murder. The two roamed the Southwestern United States, randomly killing people without mercy or remorse.

"When we were about ready to roll, I had a bit of an advance notice since it took me about a year and a half to grow that beard," the actor points out. Reports about a Devil's Rejects sequel emerged last year, with the news taking fans by surprise. Moseley, on the other hand, had a much longer time to mentally prepare to bring the character back to the big screen. Moseley noted that his physical preparation helped him mentally prepare to bring the character back.

When Denise doesn't come home, her father Don calls the police to report her missing. Don, a former policeman, is called to the scene to help the deputies search. They arrive at the Firefly house and Wydell questions Mother Firefly about the missing teens. Mother Firefly shoots Wydell in the head and kills him; Don and Steve are then killed by Otis when they find more bodies of missing cheerleaders in the barn, along with a barely conscious Mary. On October 30, 1977, amateur criminals Killer Karl and Richard Wick attempt an armed robbery at a gas station/horror museum, but are killed by the owner, Captain Spaulding, and his assistant, Ravelli.

He showed him photographs of his past victims, which he then stapled to Otis' chest. Wydell tortured all three of them at length then set the house on fire with the intent of burning them alive. Located in Altadena, the palatial Cobb Estate (known locally as the Haunted Forest) was built in 1918 and torn down by the Marx Brothers in 1959, just a few years after they bought the 107-acre property (5400 N Lake Ave. at E Loma Alta Dr, Altadena 91001). The dilapidated entrance gates remain, looking like a horror movie trope come to life. Fans will recognize the gates as the entrance to Morningside Cemetery from the 1979 supernatural thriller, Phantasm. When audiences learned that the new film would be titled "3 From Hell," speculation ignited about what the film's plot would be, with some fans even thinking we could follow these characters into Hell itself. Moseley, for one, was relieved that this wasn't the path the film took.

In September 2021, the jury convicted Robert Durst for the first degree murder of his best friend Susan Berman. In October he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Durst had tried to escape justice by posing as a deaf-mute woman in Texas. According to her biographer, Berman had been killed because she knew too much about the 1982 disappearance of Durst’s wife Kathie, who has never been found. Durst was previously tried and acquitted of the murder and dismemberment of his elderly neighbor Morris Black. An alcoholic recluse since the 1992 death of his son from leukemia, Spector moved into the 10,590 square-foot Pyrenees Castle (1700 Grand View Dr, Alhambra 91803) in 1998.

She, in turn, is the biological mother of Baby, Rufus, and Tiny, as well as the presumed adoptive mother of Otis, whose last name was previously Driftwood. Captain Spaulding and Mama are Baby's parents, making her the half-sister of Rufus and Tiny. Although a biopic of Marx that Zombie was supposed to direct has yet to come to fruition, Marx's work will forever live on through Zombie's characters. House of 1000 Corpses' Captain Spaulding takes his name from a character in Animal Crackers, Otis B. Driftwood comes from A Night at the Opera, Rufus T. Firefly is taken from Duck Soup, and Hugo Z. Hackenbush is from A Day at the Races.

Street style is nothing without the streets On these intersections, see for yourself Los Angeles Times

by design intersections are risky because

These designs may involve reversing traffic lanes from their traditional directions, which may introduce confusion and create safety issues for pedestrians and bicyclists. In addition, pedestrian paths and bicycle facilities may cross through islands or take different routes than expected. These new designs are likely to require additional information for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians as well as better accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists, including pedestrians with disabilities. If you look at the intersections in your local area, many appear to have been designed primarily with drivers and efficiency in mind. The designs show little consideration of the needs of vulnerable road users. Typically, we see high speed limits, no dedicated bicycle lanes through the intersection, no filtering lanes for motorcyclists, and short crossing times for pedestrians.

DMV Practice Permit Test Study Guide

Make a full stop before entering the crosswalk or at the limit line. If there is no limit line or crosswalk, stop before entering the intersection. A flashing yellow traffic signal light is a warning to PROCEED WITH CAUTION. A basic indemnity (or fixed cash benefit) plan that offers some coverage with a significantly lower insurance premium.

Guides and Publications

A key implication of our findings was that intersections should be designed to cater for the diverse situation awareness needs of all road users. The environment should facilitate safe interactions by ensuring that all road users are aware of each other and understand each others’ likely behaviours. The closer a collision is to head on, the more serious the consequences for those involved. Displaced left turns, jug-handle loops, roundabouts, quadrant intersections and other intersection designs all impact the angle at which road users meet each other and reassign right of way.

Autonomous Vehicles

For motor vehicles, RCUT intersections have been shown to result in significant safety benefits compared to standard four-legged intersections. The safety benefits for vehicles are attributable to eliminating left-turns at the main intersection and simplifying driver decision-making (that is, by generally dealing with one direction of travel at a time). The RCUT offers potential safety benefits for pedestrians through reduced conflict points, but no safety data have shown quantitative safety benefits for pedestrians or bicyclists. The biggest safety risk for pedes-trians and bicyclists is for those users who, due to excessive delay or indirect paths, try to find paths that differ from the intended design. Desired pedestrian and bicycle operations need to be developed at the beginning of Stage 2 of the ICE Process to develop geometric elements. At an RCUT intersection, left-turns are removed from the minor street and occur away from the intersection, thus removing potential pedestrian exposure to left-turning vehicles.

Driver License or Identification Card Changes

Even with airbags, occupants of a vehicle in an intersection crash can experience a variety of injuries. To do that, you need to use a cohort, not look retrospectively, because you’re capturing it in real time. This life-course approach is one of the study’s key design points.

Crosswalks and Crossings

Fewer people in vehicles also means more pedestrians at crossings, cyclists and scooters in the bike lane and public transit users. The Safe System approach can be used to incorporate intersection features that take possible human error into account. This proactively reduces the risk of intersection crashes that may potentially lead to death and serious injury.

Leading Pedestrian Interval

Intersection crashes also account for roughly $490 million per year in economic and societal costs. NCHRP 20-44(35) is the implementation project for NCHRP Research Report 948. When there is a pedestrian crossing a roadway with or without a crosswalk, you must use caution, reduce your speed, or stop to allow the pedestrian to safely finish crossing. These are crisscross and diagonal crosswalks that allow pedestrians to cross the intersection in any direction at the same time. When you see a yellow traffic signal light, stop, if you can do so safely. If you cannot stop safely, cautiously cross the intersection. Approved Mature driver safety course is specially designed for senior citizens to educate the latest road safety regulations and to help 55 years old drivers in facing the risk of certain driving difficulties. It works on the premise that different road users could work effectively as a team when proceeding through the intersection.

Intersections are priority areas for proactive road safety. After aggregating and contextualizing them, our data scientists apply algorithms and machine learning, transforming them into insights for road safety. Compatible with any GIS, you read the driving data like a heat map, seeing at which intersections events cluster and under what conditions, and how severe they are.

Analyzing driver behavior highlights where drivers are suddenly and atypically changing their behavior in reaction to their surroundings. Understanding the reasons for this change helps to determine what about the context at a particular traffic light or controlled intersection, say, needs to be managed. Over the last year, CISA has driven momentum on the Secure by Design initiative by shifting the conversation and providing measurable and actionable recommendations to technology manufacturers. With domestic and international partners, we released two versions of our white paper, Shifting the Balance of Cybersecurity Risk, as well as guidance urging software manufacturers to adopt memory safety roadmaps.

Although pedestrians have the right-of-way, they also must follow the rules of the road. Slow down and be ready to stop to let any vehicle, bicyclist, or pedestrian pass before you proceed. Regardless of where we reside, encountering traffic jams and incidents on the road is a common occurrence, often a daily reality for many.

Thus, drivers who are not expecting them are often not aware of them or of what they might do next. Our next step involved using a sociotechnical systems-based design process to create new intersection design concepts. A sociotechnical system is any system in which humans and technology interact for a purposeful reason. Our aim was to develop a series of new intersection designs that better support the “situation awareness requirements” of all users.

by design intersections are risky because

Another serious safety issue plaguing cities across the country is red-light running. Although traffic fatalities involving red-light running at signalized intersections have decreased by about 5%, there has been a 15% increase in pedestrian and bicycle fatalities involving red-light running. It explicitly separates motorised and non-motorised traffic. A circular pathway around the intersection is provided for pedestrians and cyclists to use.

Pedestrians

However, the volume of vehicles turning right to the minor street is higher than at a conven-tional intersection.Exhibit 7-8 shows the pedestrian conflict points with an RCUT intersection design using a “Z” crossing. An RCUT intersection reduces the number of vehicle-pedestrian conflict points relative to conventional intersections by using a “Z” crossing. However, movements requir-ing a longer unconventional route (against the “Z”) or having more conflict points may tempt Exhibit 7-7. Curb cut design used in North Carolina to assist bicyclists crossing at a rural RCUT with a stop sign. As part of the Federal Highway Administration and national effort to lower road fatalities, DOTs are encouraging active transportation alternatives to reduce cars on the road.

Crosswalks and Crossings

Break large, complex intersections into a series of smaller intersections. Use existing pedestrian behaviors and desire lines to dictate design. In the shorter term, intersections will likely comprise a complex mix of standard vehicles, driverless vehicles and partially automated vehicles, as well as cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and perhaps new forms of vulnerable road user. Without change, intersections will continue to kill and injure at an unacceptable rate.

NACTO’s publications provide a vital resource for practitioners, policy-makers, academics, and advocates.

This pathway links with cycle lanes running down the centre of the road, separated by a kerb from the roadway. Right-of-way rules help you understand who goes first when vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists meet on the road. The vehicle that arrives to the intersection first has the right-of-way. Other vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians must wait for the person who has the right-of-way. Never assume that other drivers will give you the right-of-way. Give up your right-of-way when it will help prevent collisions.

Intersections will become intelligent, with the capacity to “talk” with vehicles, and driverless vehicles will negotiate intersections for us. The most important finding from our on-road studies was that different road users experience the same intersection situations differently. Combining our expertise in data science and driving behavior, we create solutions that help you detect, locate and assess where high speed and other road safety issues are happening in your transportation system.

You evaluate and prioritize road safety measures to address risky road intersections – before car crashes happen. After implementing changes, driving data KPIs again show the impact of the changes made. Road experts can then apply strategies such as minimizing and modifying conflict points, reducing vehicle speed, improving visibility and providing sufficient space and protection for vulnerable road users. Driving behavior analysis can make the difference between a fatality, serious injury, minor injury, near miss – and no incident at all.

While there is no single reason why intersection crashes occur, experts at the local, state and national levels all agree that developing systems and leveraging technology to improve intersection safety are high priorities.

Meeting each other at a crossing, a traffic light or a roundabout intersection naturally leads to conflict, from who has right of way to how users navigate the intersection. Design can greatly influence the potential number of points of conflict, from 32 at a standard, two-lane by two-lane cross intersection, down to eight at a roundabout. Intersections are a critical aspect of street design as the point where motorist, bicycle, and pedestrian movements converge. Successful intersection design addresses all mobility and safety goals as well as opportunities to enhance the public realm. This section explores intersection design and operation, from signal timing to crosswalks, and investigates each concept as it relates to citywide goals for safety, mobility, and more vibrant, accessible public spaces. By design, intersections are complex systems whereby road users of different types, in different numbers, approaching from different directions and moving at different speeds, all have to share the same space.

Partner with MICHELIN DDi to accelerate your road safety strategy. Our cohort will allow people to identify as MENA, which will give us the opportunity to understand potential health disparities in this community. This presents an opportunity to try to understand disparities in exposures, including across neighborhoods. In Michigan, you can see pockets of environmental injustice, which is where we are targeting our enrollment. I worked on the multi-ethnic cohort study of diet and cancer at my previous institution, which included more than 200,000 people, so I had experience and comfort with building a large cohort.

Also, when you take into account poor driver behaviors, such as distracted driving and disregarding traffic controls, the potential for conflicts seems almost inevitable. Intersections, where several streets or road come together, tend to be the scene of many motor vehicle accidents. Increased traffic congestion, multiple signage, distracted drivers, pedestrians and cyclists – all of these factors can add to the risk of a collision and injuries. No matter what the reason for the crash, statistics show that a majority of accidents occur in intersections, and a majority of those accidents occur due to driver negligence.

At the time of initial enrollment, we are also asking people to donate blood and saliva samples. It’s about helping people understand the goals and value of the cohort but also refining our understanding of communities’ needs so we can give back in a way that’s meaningful to them. In terms of size, we knew that to understand these associations, we would need a lot of people. Software insecurity is threat-agnostic—well-known and easily-exploited classes of defect make it easy for nation-state adversaries and criminals alike to compromise our critical infrastructure and put Americans at unacceptable risk. And so our Secure by Design initiative seeks to drive adoption of principles and approaches to prevent these defects from the design stage, where it is possible to eliminate entire classes of vulnerabilities. Though its skyline will never measure up to the likes of New York or Chicago, Los Angeles has carved out its own architectural identity.
