Established in 2005, NYSD proudly stands as a leading destination for immersive and practical education, offering fast-track fashion design programs to students from various backgrounds and nationalities. SU houses the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ (VPA) School of Design and the S.I. Options include a BFA in Communications Design in the VPA School of Design and a Bachelor’s in Graphic Design offered in the Newhouse School. Graduates of the BFA in Graphic Design will leave the program with a completed portfolio and the skills needed to pursue positions within advertising agencies, corporations, design firms, and technology companies around the world. Potential job titles include Digital Designer, Graphic Designer, Freelance Designer, Interactive Designer, and many others. For students who are not yet ready to commit to a degree program, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) offers Certificate Programs in Digital Design including Graphic Design, Digital Product Design, Human-Centered Design, Motion Graphics, and many others.

Examples that complement the degree programs include Design Thinking, Film and Media Studies, Creative Technology, English, 3D Design, Color Studies, International Trade and Marketing, Ethics and Sustainability, and Creative Entrepreneurship. The school serves approximately 10,815 students enrolled more than 120 degree and diploma programs across six colleges and schools, including Parsons Paris. The New School Parsons is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
Graduate Programs
Art BFA graduates are prepared to pursue careers in areas such as Advertising and Public Relations, Package Design, Motion Graphics, Publishing, Web Design, Marketing, and Entertainment. The Parsons Communication Design BFA is the oldest undergraduate program of its kind in the U.S. STEM-designated and consisting of 120 credits, the program is offered on-campus, full-time. Other courses include Design Studies, Interaction Lab, Objects as History, and Typography Lab. The New School's Parsons School of Design (Parsons) is home to the School of Art, Media, and Technology (AMT), which has a Communication Design Program with several degree pathways including an AAS, BFA, and MPS. The Communication Design AAS is a campus-based, 60 credit hour program with full- and part-time schedules.

These programs may be taken individually or “stacked,” producing an “accelerated path to completion.” Like the undergraduate and graduate Communication Design/Graphic Design programs, Certificate programs offer the opportunity to complete an internship. In the senior year of this flexible, 130 credit hour program, students will complete advanced coursework, a number of seminar and studio courses, and work on the Senior Presentation for public viewing. Course examples for the Graphic Design area include Graphic Design I-II, Typography, Computational Studio, Motion Graphics, Advanced Design, and Independent Study in Graphic Design. Graduates of the Design Programs at School of Visual Arts hold positions at advertising agencies, marketing firms, publishing companies, design studios, nonprofit organizations, museums, and more.
Enrolled NYSD students have the privilege of borrowing books on a first-come, first-served basis, with a two-week borrowing period. The Communication Design AAS “focuses on computer technology, typography, color theory, layout design, and conceptual problem solving. Students develop their own styles while studying design principles, theory, and communication skills.” Other program highlights include field trips to top design firms in New York City, guest lectures, and internship opportunities. Graduates of the program will be prepared for entry-level design positions or for further study in a related BFA program at FIT. Options include Advertising and Digital Design, Graphic Design, Packaging Design, and Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design. Cooper Union School of Art offers a flexible BFA in Art with a Specialization in Graphic Design.

You'll have six hours of personalized tutoring sessions to address any challenges and reinforce your understanding of InDesign concepts. When you complete the course, showcase your expertise by taking the Adobe InDesign Certification exam. Master basic to advanced Illustrator skills and earn certification as an Adobe Illustrator Professional in this comprehensive program at Noble Desktop. You’ll learn to confidently craft stunning vector graphics, logos, and illustrations under the guidance of expert instructors who are available to answer questions and provide constructive feedback. An integral part of the program is an additional six hours of private tutoring, where you’ll be able to work through advanced topics in detail and overcome any challenges you might be facing. When you’ve completed the program, you can take the Adobe Illustrator Certification exam.
The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (Cooper Union) is home to the School of Art, which houses the Art BFA Program. Students in this program have the opportunity to select courses from seven disciplines upon completion of the First Year Foundation Program. Disciplines include Graphic Design, Printmaking, Drawing, Photography, Audiovisual, Painting, and Sculpture. In the junior year of the Art BFA Program, students may take electives from the Schools of Architecture and Engineering to develop skills in other areas. School of Visual Arts opened in 1947 as the Cartoonists and Illustrators school.
Recent graduates are working as Graphic Designers at places such as Brawn Media, Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, and Trampoline Design; as a Creative Director at Mohawk Fine Papers; and as a Designer for a 2020 presidential candidate. Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) opened in 1944 with just 100 students on the top two floors of the High School of Needles Trades. Today, as part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, FIT spans an entire city block and serves more than 10,000 students enrolled in a variety of programs.
The School of Arts & Sciences houses the Graphic + Media Design (GMD) Program, which leads to a BFA. Graduates of the program go on to become Art Directors, Commercial and Industrial Designers, Graphic Designers, Marketing Specialists, Public Relations Specialists, Software Applications Developers, Web Developers, and many others. Graphic Design alumni who have graduated in the past 1-5 years have obtained employment with companies such as MasterCard, NBC Universal Media, LLC, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and Random House. Some have completed graduate programs at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, NYIT, NYU, Yale, and more. Students have studied in a number of countries including Australia, England, France, Italy, and Scotland.
